Vietnam-Australia bilateral trade increased by 34% in the first four months of 2021

Addressing Vietnamese and Australian businesses at a business cooperation conference organized by the Vietnam Entrepreneurs Association (VEAS) in Sydney, Australia on May 21, Vietnamese Consul General in Sydney Nguyen Dang Thang said that the trade turnover between the two countries has grown steadily over the past several years and achieved an impressive increase of nearly 34% in the period from January to April 2021.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Thang said that in 2020, two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Australia increased by 3.94% to nearly US$8.3 billion. Particularly in the first four months of this year, the total import-export turnover between the two countries reached 3.63 billion USD, up 33.85% over the same period last year.

In particular, exports of Vietnam and Australia to each other’s markets both increased. This is a very meaningful result in the context that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruptions to global trade and a number of countries, including those in the world, Mr. Nguyen Dang Thang emphasized. countries in Southeast Asia, are restructuring their supply chains and bringing them home.

However, according to Mr. Nguyen Dang Thang, the current level of trade turnover does not reflect the true economic potential of the two countries. In order to increase the current level of trade turnover, businesses of the two countries need to do more, not only trade in more traditional products such as seafood, agricultural products, minerals, garments, shoes, and materials. construction, but also to exploit the potential of import and export of other commodities in which the two sides have comparative advantages in the global market.

Mr. Nguyen Dang Thang also called for Australian businesses to pay more attention to and invest in Vietnam, especially in areas where Australia has in-depth experience and has its own advantages such as processing industry, manufacturing, and agriculture. high-tech industry and logistics.

Sharing with the Vietnamese Consul General at the conference, Ms. Dianne Tipping, Chairwoman of the Australian Export Council, affirmed that Australia’s trade relationship with Vietnam has grown at the fastest rate in recent years comparing  with other countries in the region and is becoming more and more important to this country.

Ms. Tipping said that not only trade in goods, trade in services between the two countries has also experienced impressive growth in recent years, such as financial technology services, healthcare, education, etc.

The Australian Export Council encourages Australian businesses to deploy and expand their business activities in Vietnam, especially in areas and industries with high growth potential in the future such as information technology, transformation Digital, finance – banking, environmental services, health care and beauty…

Ms. Tipping revealed that the Council also advises the Australian Government to support trade promotion with Vietnam, especially support for SMEs are interested in the Vietnamese market, and consider establishing a travel corridor between the two countries when conditions permit.
